Obituary for Gayla S. Young

Gayla S. Young, 64, of Denmark, Iowa passed away at 9:07 a.m. Monday, December 31, 2018 at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

Born on August 12, 1954 in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Robert Francis and Virginia Pearl (Peel) Riddle.

Survivors include one son: J.B. (Teresa) Young of Fort Madison, Iowa; one daughter: Stacy Beach of Denmark, Iowa; five grandchildren: Saundra & Katie Beach and Nick, Haley, and Nolan Guzman; one sister: Glee (Mark) Salladay of Chesapeake, Virginia; two brothers: Robert (Mary) Riddle of Green Valley, Arizona and Kevin (Laurie) Riddle of Denmark, Iowa. Also surviving are several aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins and her beloved dog Betsy.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Gayla was a 1972 graduate of Fort Madison High School, after graduation she received her bachelors degree in education from Western Illinois University. Gayla was a third grade teacher at Danville Elementary School. She was a member of the Harmony Bible Church in Danville, Iowa and the Denmark Historical Society. She served as Vice President of the Fort Madison Community School District School Board and was a very active volunteer in her community. She was the secretary treasurer of the Denmark Fire & Rescue and helped organize the Denmark Fire Auxiliary. Gayla saw the best in each student and everyone she met.

Friends may call after 12:00 noon, Thursday, January 3, 2019 at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point, Iowa, where family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

A Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, January 4, 2019 at Harmony Bible Church in Danville, Iowa with Reverend Dan Dingus officiating.

Burial will be at Denmark Cemetery in Denmark, Iowa.

Memorials have been established in her memory to Denmark Fire & Rescue or University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.
