Obituary for Harold Edward "Harry" Boeding

Harold Edward “Harry” Boeding, 96, a lifelong resident of West Point and St. Paul, Iowa, passed away peacefully at 9:10 a.m. on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at Savannah Heights in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

Harry was born on December 31, 1922, in West Point, the son of Edward H. and Irene (Strothman) Boeding. He grew up in the West Point area and entered the United States Navy in 1943 where he served in the south Pacific and was honorably discharged in May of 1946. Harry married the love of his life, Joan Steffensmeier on February 10, 1947 in St. Paul. Married for sixty-seven loving years, Joan and Harry built a life together that revolved around family, friends, church and community. She preceded him in death on December 16, 2014.

In 1948, Harry and Joan made the bold decision to start their own business and they owned and operated Harry’s Service Station in St. Paul for over fifty-five years. Harry worked tirelessly to operate the service station assisted by Joan and their children. He was quick to respond to emergencies and for many years worked six days a week serving the community. But he savored his Sundays devoted to having fun with his family and friends.

One of Harry’s greatest joys was nurturing his beautiful yard with Joan expanding the many flowers and shrubs year after year. He also enjoyed biking, boating, hunting and trap shooting. He was a member of St. James the Less Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post #668 and the St. Paul Volunteer Fire Department for thirty years.

Harry is survived by one daughter: Sheryl Boeding of Clear Lake, Iowa; three sons: Randy (Pat) Boeding of Friendswood, Texas, Reg (Ann) Boeding of Mahwah, New Jersey and Rollie (Mary) Boeding of Middleton, Wisconsin: five grandchildren: Kurt (Jill) Boeding, Prairieville, Louisiana, Jill (Steve) Sock of Pearland, Texas, Heather Brasher of Houston, Texas, Sarah Boeding of Pewaukee, Wisconsin and Matt Boeding of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin; five great grandchildren; one sister: Darlene Umthum of Ft. Madison, Iowa and one brother: Richard (Vera) Boeding of West Point, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Joan Boeding; his parents; one sister and seven brothers.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, January 6, 2019, at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point where a Parish Rosary will be recited at 2:00 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service will be held at 4:00 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 7, 2019, at St. James the Less Catholic Church in St. Paul, Iowa with Father Bruce DeRammelaere as celebrant.

Burial will be at St. James Cemetery in St. Paul with full military rites presented by the West Point American Legion Holtz-Geers Post #668.

Our family is most appreciative of the loving care Harry received the past several years at Sunnybrook Assisted Living and Savannah Heights Care Center in Mt Pleasant as well as Every Step Hospice of Mt Pleasant.

Memorials have been established in his memory to the St. James Catholic Church or Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center
